MDR vs XDR: what's the difference, what should you buy

Both terms get used loosely. Here's the practical distinction with real pricing data, the case for each, and why most modern MDR services are XDR under the hood.

One-line summary

XDR is broader EDR with more telemetry sources. MDR is the managed service layer where analysts operate XDR or EDR on your behalf.

The reality

Most MDR services are XDR under the hood

The clean three-way distinction breaks down when you look at how MDR vendors actually deliver. Arctic Wolf operates an XDR platform underneath their Concierge Security Team. CrowdStrike Falcon Complete is built on the Falcon XDR foundation. Sophos MDR uses Sophos XDR. SentinelOne Vigilance sits on Singularity XDR.

What this means in practice:

  • Buying MDR usually means buying XDR plus the analysts to operate it
  • The XDR platform under MDR is sometimes available standalone (Falcon Elite, Singularity Complete, Sophos XDR)
  • The cost of MDR minus the analyst service layer roughly equals the cost of standalone XDR
  • If you eventually staff your own SOC, you can drop the MDR service while keeping the XDR platform

When XDR alone wins

The case for self-managed XDR

XDR alone makes sense when:

  • You have 5+ tier-2 analysts already on staff
  • Endpoint count is large enough (5,000+) that in-house economics work
  • You need detection rules tuned to highly custom internal applications
  • Regulatory requirements forbid third-party SOC operations on your data
  • Your team has demonstrated ability to keep an EDR or XDR platform tuned and effective

The alternative path

Many organisations start with MDR to get coverage immediately, then transition to self-managed XDR over 18-36 months as their internal team matures. The XDR platform stays; the managed service layer comes off. This staged approach lets you mature operations without the year-one infrastructure spend of building from zero.

FAQ

MDR vs XDR questions

What's the difference between MDR and XDR?
XDR is broader EDR (more telemetry sources). MDR is managed detection and response, typically delivered on top of an XDR platform. XDR is software you operate; MDR is software plus analysts who operate it for you. Many modern MDR services are XDR under the hood (Arctic Wolf, CrowdStrike Falcon Complete, Sophos MDR all use XDR-class telemetry).
Is XDR cheaper than MDR?
Per endpoint, yes. XDR runs $8-25 per endpoint per month versus MDR at $15-50. But XDR requires you to operate it yourself (analysts, runbooks, 24/7 staffing). Total cost of ownership for XDR plus the team to run it is usually higher than MDR for organisations under 5,000 endpoints.
Do I need both XDR and MDR?
No. MDR includes the XDR platform underneath, so you don't pay for both separately. The exception is Expel, which monitors your existing XDR or EDR rather than replacing it. If you already have a heavy XDR investment, Expel-style overlay MDR can be cheaper than switching to a bundled MDR.
When is XDR alone enough?
When you have 5+ in-house analysts to operate it 24/7, your detection requirements are highly customised, and you have the budget for SIEM, threat intel, and SOAR alongside the XDR platform. Below that staffing level, MDR is typically the right answer because the analyst layer is what makes detection effective.
